Chester & District League (30th January 2011)
Waverton Scorer (season's total in brackets)
Robbie Foster - 1 (7)
Report
The match may have been played on a difficult, slippy and bobbly pitch but the conditions weren't to blame for Waverton's defeat, in the end they lost to a Princes Villa team who simply battled harder for the win.
The match started slowly, as both teams tried to come to terms with the pitch, but after the first five minutes or so Waverton started to take control with the vast majority of the possession. There have been plenty of warning signs over the last few games though that just building territorial advantage can count for nothing if the team fail to turn it into goals, and this happened again right through to half time, with the midfield providing far fewer incisive balls than normal, and the forward line (unbalanced by the absence of Sam Jones) failing to capitalise on any of the half chances that were created. The lack of a goal from the Wasps started to see Princes Villa grow in confidence, and just before the break they took advantage of a rare breakaway to take a one goal lead into half time, against the run of play.
Although normally consistent, Waverton do occasionally seem to throw in a very lacklustre performance (witness Malpas last year!), and today was definitely this season's poorest performance. Despite only trailing by one goal the team didn't seem to start the second half with their usual belief, and within a few minutes this told, as a couple of slips in defence allowed Princes Villa in to take a 2-0 lead. Although Waverton battled on (particularly Jorge Percival down the left) it was never with any real quality, and it was half way through the half before a Robbie Foster strike brought the score back to 2-1 to give the Wasps a potential opening back into the game. They never really built on this though, creating few clear chances in the second period, and after Princes Villa added a third from a corner Waverton never really looked like getting back on level terms.
As the Manager summed it up it was definitely "a bad day at the office". The team now need to pick themselves up, play as they know they can, and win the return fixture against Princes Villa next week. If they can do that then they'll still be favourites to retain the league title, with either Boughton (against Groves, Nomads & Colts) or Nomads (against Boughton & Colts x2) having to win their last three games to force a play off.
Manager's MoM: Jorge Percival
