Report

Waverton played some of their best, most consistent, passing football of the season to run out comfortable 5-0 victors against Vicars Cross, maintaining their clear lead at the top of the table.

The Wasps took control of this game right from the kick-off, holding the vast majority of the possession and creating lots of chances. Unfortunately the finishing wasn't quite up to the standard of the rest of the play, and therefore their total dominance of the first period was only rewarded by a single goal advantage at the break, as a result of a good strike from Sam Jones.

There was little to say at half time other than for the team to keep up the same quality of play, and keep on creating as many chances. Vicars Cross had defended doggedly in the first half, but it was almost inevitable that they wouldn't be able to keep this up throughout the game.

The scoreline in the second period finally reflected the balance of the play. Waverton continued to play well throughout the team, strong in defence, creative in midfield and dominant in attack, and the goals this play deserved eventually began to flow. Sam Jones added a second (off his back!), Aaron Hassall scored his 11th of the season after another strong through run, and Matt Sheen finally got the reward his overall play and determination deserved. Charlie Nicholson then returned from his sub spell in an unusual striking role and added the fifth to complete a comprehensive victory.

Just two league games left than (at least as currently scheduled!), both against Princes Villa, and if Waverton can keep up this standard of play, and preferably just be a bit more clinical in their finishing, then they should be able to retain their league title.
