Match Report

After a bit of a hiccup in our only pre-season friendly, the Wasps entered our first competitive game of the season, in the Cheshire Minor Cup, with a point to prove, but not quite sure what to expect from our unknown opponents, Altrincham, who play in the Timperley & District League.

The team started really brightly though, with some excellent passing football and a real determination to be the first to every loose ball. This soon got the results it deserved and the Wasps took the lead after only five minutes, with Sam Jones finishing off a lovely flowing move. After Matt Sheen and Robbie Simpson added a second and a third shortly afterwards the result was never in any doubt (by anybody other than the manager who continued to worry until we'd taken a seven goal lead!).

The team were strong in every department; from a very solid defensive performance, through a dominant midfield and right up to the attack where the two strikers thoroughly earned their MoM awards not just for the goals they scored (although that helps!) but through some really good passing and interplay between them. All three early scorers added more to their tallies, and were joined in the second half by goals from Matt Simpson (was it a cross or a shot?) and a debut strike from Alex Abraham.

The Altrincham team never let their heads drop and continued to battle, and try to play football, right through the game. So they probably deserved their two late goals, even though the Wasps defence were visibly disappointed not to keep a clean sheet. After a comprehensive 11-2 victory then, in our first ever County Cup game, the Wasps will travel to play Barnton Youth (near Northwich) in Round 2, scheduled for the 4^th October.
