Report

At the third time of asking Waverton finally got to play their fourth round tie against Ridgewood Rangers in the Cheshire FA Minor Cup. It was a hard fought game, against a good side, but Waverton scored a winner in the last minute of full time to progress through to the next round. It was a victory the team deserved on the overall run of play, and this now puts them through to the Quarter Finals, to be played sometime in January.

Waverton started the game brighter than the opposition, and had most of the early possession, restricting Ridgewood to the occasional breakaway, although they did look dangerous when this happened with strength and pace up front. The Wasps got the lead their pressure deserved, after about ten minutes, when Matt Sheen latched on to a good ball over the top from Alex Wilkinson and calmly slotted it past the keeper. For the next ten minutes they dominated the game, with good passing throughout the team, but unfortunately never quite made this pressure tell, missing several good chances to double their lead. Inevitably the team came to regret these misses as Ridgewood started to come back into the game and exert some pressure of their own, and they equalised after half an hour, with another strong pacy run from their key striker finished off with a good strike into the corner. For the final five minutes of the half Ridgewood then dominated, pushing hard to take the lead, but the Wasps defence stood firm with some really solid goalkeeping from Ollie dealing with any danger.

Having weathered the storm before half time the Wasps had regrouped after the break and were firmly back on top again in the opening exchanges of the second half. They soon took a deserved lead (for the second time) as Alex Wilkinson connected with a Robbie Foster corner, and despite a defender's effort to block it the ball spun over the line. Just like the first half this led to a long period of Waverton dominance, but again they failed to capitalise on it and missed a number of good opportunities to take a two goal lead. With five minutes to go the team again paid the price for not putting the game beyond reach when they could, with Ridgewood getting on the end of a long flat throw to score an opportunist equaliser.

So many times this season though Waverton have shown they have the character to fight back from setbacks, and they did so yet again. Just after the goal Ridgewood broke away with a good chance to take an undeserved lead, but through a combination of a last gasp tackle from Jordan Coxall and more brave goalkeeping from Ollie the danger passed, and the Wasps were then the ones pushing forward for a winner, to prevent the game going into extra time. In the very last minute they succeeded. As Sam Jones floated a ball over the top from a deep free kick the Ridgewood defence ran out too late to play Waverton offside (with the referee perfectly in line to judge) and the ball dropped to Alex Wilkinson who stayed calm to slot the ball into the corner for the winner. After calmly playing out the two minutes of additional time, Waverton were celebrating a close victory which, on the run of play, they probably should have made easier for themselves.

All the teams left in at this stage will be strong, but if the Wasps continue to play with this much character they shouldn't be worried about facing any opposition in the Quarter Finals.

Match Report
" At last! - after longing for a "regulation victory" without some of the recent dramas, the coach was not to be disappointed!. Driving rain was the order of the day as the match kicked off with the Wasps re-jigging their formation to cover for the rare absence of Jordan at the back, with Matt Simpson slotting in most effectively, as well as switching Sam Jones and Alex Wilkinson to help beef up the midfield.
A solid performance resulted with a number of early chances being created that forced a series of fine saves from the Nomads keeper and not a hint of a threat from their recently dangerous midfield and strikers.
With the coach just starting to fear another close result and the accompanying emotional highs and lows, deadlock was eventually broken after 30 mins with a fine strike by Luke White from inside the box after the visitors failed to clear a Robbie Foster corner.
A further period of sustained pressure was to follow as Waverton closed out the first half with comfort leaving the half time talk a bit mundane by recent standards!!.
More of the same as the second period kicked off and Matt Sheen soon celebrated his return to full fitness with a trademark finish from 12 yards out on the left and the Wasps were now in full flow with slick passing and strong defence to snuff out the occasional half chance that was created by the Nomads .
As the game entered its last quarter,Will Doerr set off on another of his jinking runs up the left before cutting into the box only to find his legs unceremoniously chopped as we was about to unleash a thunderbolt!  PENALTY!! - up stepped Sam Jones to fire home and complete the scoring and cap a most encouraging performance from all 13 in the squad.
There were many contenders for MOM but the verdict went to Will Doerr (Coach) and George Gresty (Supporters).
Next week ? - Cheshire Cup v unknown entity Ridgewood Rangers from Birkenhead.
Bring it on !!"

Match report

Once again the Wasps showed themselves to be a team of two halves (and look at the stats at the bottom of this report which prove it!), but somehow, through sheer willpower, they managed to claw their way back to a 4-3 victory to stay on top of the league table.

At least they started a bit stronger this week, controlling the game well in the first 5/10 minutes and taking a deserved lead when Sam Jones converted his third strike of the season from an "edge of the area" free kick, after being fouled himself just outside the box. After that though the Waverton midfield started to get overrun by a very quick and mobile Nomads team, with the result that the ball kept coming back immediately, virtually every time it was cleared. Inevitably this resulted in goals, and by the break the Wasps had slumped to a 3-1 deficit for the second time in two games, with the only consolation being that they at least had a full half to put it right this week. In truth the scoreline at the break could have been worse were it not for some spirited last ditch defending, with Jorge Percival in particular pulling off one fantastic tackle to prevent what had seemed like another certain goal.

The half time talk expressed the coach's dissatisfaction (again) with a below par first half performance, but pointed to all the come backs the team have made over the last few weeks and asked for another repeat performance. At least in the second half the team would have both the slope and the low sun in their favour, in the way the Nomads had enjoyed before the break.

Once again the Wasps did play much beter in the second half, starting to pass the ball around again and exert presure on their opponents. It was a while though before this dominance resulted in a goal, and the half was nearly 20 minutes old before a Wasps corner was cleared to George Gresty 15 yards out who volleyed it back left footed into the top corner to reduce the deficit to 3-2. The Wasps kept pushing, but with Matt Sheen clearly under the weather from illness, they didn't present their usual level of goal threat, and with ten minutes remaining their first defeat of the season started to look like a distinct possibility. But then, at a crucial time, one of the Nomads clearly handled a Robbie Foster cross, and Waverton's dead ball specialist Sam Jones cooly slotted home the resultant penalty to level the scores.

The team weren't going to settle for a draw though, and with the momentum behind them continued to push for a winner, although when (the ex-Wasp) Luke Williams made a great save from Matt Sheen with a minute to go it looked like becoming the second 3-3 draw between the two teams this season. But amazingly the Wasps "never say die" attitude triumphed yet again, with a great last minute run from Robbie Foster resulting in a cross to the far post where Cameron Faulkner scored the winner with an overhead kick from close range, with literally the last kick of the game.

So, another "get out of jail" performance from the Wasps, to stay on top of the league, but they really could do with recording a comfortable win sooner rather than later. To demonstrate how differently the team is playing in the latter part of their games you just have to look at the goals for/against stats. In the first half of their six league games, so far this season, the Wasps have scored 8 goals, but conceded 12, while in the second half they've scored 18 and, amazingly, only conceded 1, in over three and a half hours of football. Maybe we need a different approach, and should bring the half time talk forward to the start of the game!

Dream Team scores will be updated in the next few days.

Castrol Athletic 3 v 5 AFC Waverton Wasps

After another extraordinary game, the Wasps eventually sealed another victory, by a margin of 5-3, to stay at the top of the Chester & District League. But with only a few minutes remaining they were still trailing 3-1, and only secured victory by demonstrating an amazing determination to keep fighting right up until the end.

It all looked very promising for the first five minutes, with Waverton knocking the ball around nicely and cutting open the Castrol defence 3 or 4 times, only to miss the final chance on each occasion. They were unfortunately made to pay for this, as a breakaway from Castrol, after ten minutes, resulted in their first shot on goal, which then took a wicked deflection off Jordan Coxall to fly past Ollie Tyler. Unbelievably, in a season which has now seen seven victories and one draw, this is the fifth time the Wasps have gone behind. The goal seemed to set the team back on their heels, and worse was to follow, as a fantastic shot from a Castrol striker put his team 2-0 ahead.

Shocked by the scoreline the Waverton team really didn't play well for the remainder of the first half, and in their desperation to get a goal back they ended up hurrying everything and hitting hopeful balls, rather than going back to playing good passing football. Even when they did create chances, either the finishing wasn't up to scratch or the woodwork saved Castrol. As a result Waverton went into the break 2-0 down in a game where they'd had the lions share of the possession. The only consolation to take at half time was that the team must know they could still come back, having done it before!

Waverton pushed hard from the restart and soon had something to show for it. Just as he'd done against Nomads Colts, from a similar situation, Sam Jones hit an unstoppable free kick into the top corner to make it 2-1. From there though it just seemed like the Wasps were not going to get any slice of luck, and despite creating numerous chances most of them (four at least!) just kept rebouding back off the bar or a post. As the frustration grew on the pitch (and amongst the supporters!) Waverton started to commit more and more players forward seeking an equaliser, and as a result the almost inevitable happened, with Castrol scoring a third goal on the break. The Wasps were now 3-1 down with seven minutes to go.

Having defended doggedly though (with a fair degree of time wasting), Castrol almost seemed to relax at this point as if they'd won, and started to give the ball away, and the Waverton team (having not led their heads go down) showed amazing character to start taking advantage of this. Within 3 minutes Matt Sheen had scored two goals to level the scores at 3-3. Suddenly the momentum was with the Wasps, who continued to push forward strongly, and it was Castrol that were starting to look shell shocked. With attacks suddenly coming in from all directions, and defenders who'd been solid all game starting to panic, it was only a couple more minutes before Waverton had taken the lead, with a second goal from Sam Jones and then Matt Sheen completing his hat-trick.

In an amazing turnaround the Wasps had gone from two goals down, to two goals up, with four goals in the space of five minutes! To the very great relief of the team, coach and supporters they then played out the final two minutes to run out winners, something which had looked impossible only a few minutes earlier. Next week it's Chester Nomads, a tougher prospect on paper, and the Wasps really do need to score the first goal! (Dream Team scores updated to include this game).

Match Report

With no competitive game for three weeks there had to be a chance the Wasps would prove a bit "ring rusty", but instead they put in their best performance of the season (yes better than the win over Boughton!) to win a very competitive, Cheshire Cup 3rd Round, tie 2-1 against a strong and competitive team from the Stockport Metro League.

The match kicked off in extremely blustery conditions, and with rain streaming down. You'd never have guessed it though, with both teams making light of the difficult weather to play some excellent football, and the early exchanges were very much honours even. It was immediately clear that Apollo were a very strong team, and they played at a pace and with a quality of passing that were both well above that which Waverton face week in, week out in the Chester & District League. After Apollo had had the first couple of half chances though it was Waverton who took the lead after 15 minutes. The home team were only able to half clear a swirling ball to the edge of the area, where Robbie Foster calmly controlled it and placed a great shot past the Apollo keeper.

The home team reacted very positively to going a goal down, and continued to push forward with a lot of purpose. Despite some strong defending (all over the pitch) from Waverton, Apollo probably deserved their equaliser after half an hour, with a well placed shot into the top corner which gave Ollie no chance. A few minutes later though he did excellently, to tip away a vicious cross/shot which would otherwise have put Apollo in front. Having weathered the storm (in more ways than one!) the Wasps came back into the game strongly as half time approached, and nicked another goal to go back in front. Another extremely quick break (one of many) from Matt Simpson resulted in a good cross from the right, controlled by Matt Sheen who then gave a simple pass to Luke White who in turn smashed it into the roof of the net. So the Wasps finished their best (and toughest) half of football all season with a 2-1 lead at the interval.

The Coach's half time team talk praised the team for a strong first half performance, but warned the Wasps to expect an even stronger barrage from Apollo in the second half, and that certainly proved to be the case. The second half wasn't pretty, but it was full of commitment and full-blooded (but fair) challenges all over the pitch from both teams. It also seemed to last for ever, as Waverton continued to hold just a slender, and very nervous, one goal lead. The high quality of the Wasps defending though (from all 13 players) really restricted Apollo to no more than half chances in the second period, other than a dangerous free kick from the edge of the box (which sailed over), and an occasion when two of their strikers had escaped and were bearing down on Ollie with an equaliser seeming certain, until Jordan Coxall somehow got back with a fantastic last ditch challenge. In truth Waverton probably had the better quality chances to add to the scoring in the second half, but they didn't put any of them away, and so kept their supporters biting their fingernails right up until the final whistle.

In the end though it stayed 2-1, with a real feeling of satisfaction in beating such good quality opponents. This puts the Wasps into the last 16 of the Cheshire Cup, and we await the draw to see who will stand in the way of a place in the Quarter Finals. (The Wasps Dream Team stats will be updated to include this game over the next couple of days). ==============================================================================

Match Report

Another “down and up” performance from the Wasps with, as usual, the “down” bit coming at the start before a recovery later. In the end however they ran out 5-2 winners, although it was nowhere near as comfortable as the scoreline suggests, to maintain their position at the top of the division.

Having won the toss Newton used some local knowledge to play with the very strong winds behind them, and within 5 mins had used this to their advantage to take a 1-0 lead. Although it was difficult to play in these conditions the Wasps were also contributing to their difficulties by playing well below par in the first half. With the team having missed several chances to equalize Matt Sheen eventually levelled things 5 minutes before the break, only for Newton to take the lead again almost straight away from another long clearance bouncing awkwardly into the Waverton box.

With nobody taking much credit from the first half performance it was necessary (again!) for the team to stage a recovery in the second half. With the strong wind now behind them now though it was a totally different game after the break, with Newton only really having one chance in the whole half, which was well saved by Ollie Tyler. While they were bombarding the Newton goal however Waverton were still not putting their chances away well enough, and with 10 minutes left it still stood at 2-2, after just one further goal (again from Matt Sheen).

Having decided they'd given the Coach (and all the supporters!) enough heart palpitations though the Wasps finally came good in the final ten minutes, playing much better football and adding three late strikes, two more from Matt Sheen, making four in total (and earning him the Coach’s MoM award) and one from Alex Wilkinson. For a solid performance in defence (especially in the second half) and some strong forward runs the supporters gave Jorge Percival their award.

Not a great performance then, but in the end it was enough to keep the winning run going and keep the team at the top of the league table. Bookmakers are however beginning to lay ever longer odds on Waverton scoring the first goal in a game (any game!).

Match Report

Another solid all round performance from the Wasps saw them, eventually, run out comfortable winners in this Cheshire Minor Cup second round match against Barnton, with a final scoreline of 12-3.

A slow start, yet again (this is becoming too much of a habit!) saw the Barnton team take an early two goal lead. The first came from a fast break from one of their strong players in midfield (who was definitely the Barnton MoM) and the second came from a long range free kick which was allowed to bounce on the penalty spot and loop over Ollie into the net. Pleasingly though the Wasps didn’t panic at this point, but continued to play some very good passing football showing confidence that they’d get themselves back into the game. A quick reply from Matt Sheen, followed by a close range effort from Sam Jones saw the Wasps back on level terms after 15 mins, and at this point they started to dominate the game.

The final 20 minutes of the first half was the Wasps best period and they reaped the benefits, with two more calm finishes from Matt Sheen, a good strike from Alex Wilkinson and a close range effort from Jordan Coxall after running the length of the field to support an attack. Suddenly the Wasps were 6-2 up, and despite another goal late in the half from a fantastic Barnton free kick they finished the half well in command at 6-3.

The second half was a calmer affair all round (particularly in defence!) and Waverton controlled the game throughout. A second half hat-trick from Matt Sheen (to add to the one he’d already scored in the first!), two more from Sam Jones (one from chasing a lost cause) and a rare headed goal from Alex Wilkinson meant the final score was 12-3 to the Wasps.

This result puts Waverton into the final 32 of the Cheshire Minor Cup, and on the performance overall they should be confident they can go further still, especially once they start playing for the full 70 minutes and not just the final 65!

Match Report
The most remarkable thing about this match was how unremarkable it was (other than the scoreline!). After the extreme cut & thrust of all the matches between the Wasps and their arch rivals Boughton in recent years this was, quite simply, a comfortable 4-0 victory in which the Wasps outplayed their opponents in every area of the pitch and thoroughly deserved the clear victory.
Things were a little more even in the early exchanges, with a scare for the Wasps when a Boughton effort clipped the top of the crossbar. Soon afterwards though Will Doerr calmly converted an excellent diagonal through ball, quickly followed up by a superb strike from Matt Sheen from the edge of the box, and it was 2-0 to the Wasps. From this point on the Wasps controlled the game and the Boughton team looked a bit shellshocked, low on confidence and short on ideas about how to get back into the game. Matt Sheen added a third before half time, as Boughton struggled to clear an excellent corner from Robbie Foster, and Matt Simpson made it four, right at the start of the second period, after a fast break and a cool finish. Although the Wasps missed a couple of later chances to make the margin of victory even more emphatic, they calmly controlled the rest of the second half to secure the three points in style and to go to the top of the League for the first time!
It was, as indicated by the MoM decisions, a real all round team performance. The back four were well organised and very solid, restricting Boughton to no more than half chances, with Ollie Tyler in commanding form behind them, pulling off a number of good punched clearances. As a result, this is probably the first time ever that Boughton have failed to score! The midfield were back to their competitive best, strong in the tackle, making sure they got to the loose ball first, and providing great service to the strikers. Up front we were more clinical than we have been earlier in the season, with calmer finishing leading to a much better chance/goal conversion ratio, and Matt Sheen moving on to 10 goals for the season in only the fourth competitive game.
If the Wasps can keep up this level of performance (but not get complacent) then they could be in for a good run in the two cup competitions, and should be aiming to stay at the top of the tree in the League. Beware though, if the (very) long Boughton team talk after the game did its job then they'll be very keen to reverse the outcome next time we meet!

Match Report
This was the classic "game of two halves", with Nomads Colts taking a 2-0 lead into the break only for the Wasps to come storming back in the second half for their first League victory of the season.
Compared to the previous week (against Nomads) the Wasps started the match very brightly, but having missed both of the two good early chances they'd created, the team seemed to "go back into its shell", allowing the Colts to come into the game strongly with two good goals before the break.
After a masterclass in half time team talks from Mark though, encouraging the boys to believe in themselves and to play "with a smile on their faces", things quickly turned around after the break. The all important "early goal" in the second half was provided courtesy of an accurate free kick, right in the top corner, from Sam Jones (keeping up his excellent scoring record against his Kings schoolmates!), and the confidence came flooding back right through the team. Matt Sheen soon added an equaliser, with an extreme lob of the goalkeeper, and a few minutes later a Jordan Coxall header from a corner was saved on the line, but scrambled in on the rebound by Cameron Faulkener. From a 2-0 deficit the team were suddenly 3-2 up after no more than 15 mins of the second half.
The Wasp's confidence continued to build, and it was no surprise when the two strikers both added a second goal each, to make the score a very comfortable looking 5-2 by the final whistle. The MoM awards went to Cameron Faulkener, for a terrific all round game, and to Jordan Coxall for an energetic performance which saw him popping up all over the pitch to make valuable contributions, including assists for two of the goals.
The "second half" team (if not the first!) looked ready for the "big one" against Boughton next week.

Chester Nomads 3 v 3 AFC Waverton Wasps

Match Report
After the previous week's cup success the Wasps took on their first C&D JFL game, and a tough encounter it proved to be. The Chester Nomads team competed very well (and were seemingly stronger than last season). In particular they started very quickly, attacking with pace, and soon took a deserved early lead.
After recovering from the initial shock the Wasps recovered well though and clawed themselves back into the game with a good equaliser from Sam Jones. However the Nomads continued to push forward strongly and twice more in the first half they took a one goal lead, only to be pegged back on each occasion by another Wasps equaliser, the first from Matt Sheen (his sixth of the season) and the second from Robbie Foster on the stroke of half time, giving a 3-3 score line at the break following a frenetic first period.
Both teams played a lot more cagily in the second half, with both defences looking solid, and there proved to be no further goals in the game. Having composed themselves more after half-time, the Wasps probably had the majority of the second half possession and certainly had two or three really good chances in the last quarter of an hour to secure all three points. Given the way Nomads had started however the draw was probably a fair result overall, and it was confirmation that the League this year is likely to be more than a two horse race.

Match Report

After a bit of a hiccup in our only pre-season friendly, the Wasps entered our first competitive game of the season, in the Cheshire Minor Cup, with a point to prove, but not quite sure what to expect from our unknown opponents, Altrincham, who play in the Timperley & District League.

The team started really brightly though, with some excellent passing football and a real determination to be the first to every loose ball. This soon got the results it deserved and the Wasps took the lead after only five minutes, with Sam Jones finishing off a lovely flowing move. After Matt Sheen and Robbie Simpson added a second and a third shortly afterwards the result was never in any doubt (by anybody other than the manager who continued to worry until we'd taken a seven goal lead!).

The team were strong in every department; from a very solid defensive performance, through a dominant midfield and right up to the attack where the two strikers thoroughly earned their MoM awards not just for the goals they scored (although that helps!) but through some really good passing and interplay between them. All three early scorers added more to their tallies, and were joined in the second half by goals from Matt Simpson (was it a cross or a shot?) and a debut strike from Alex Abraham.

The Altrincham team never let their heads drop and continued to battle, and try to play football, right through the game. So they probably deserved their two late goals, even though the Wasps defence were visibly disappointed not to keep a clean sheet. After a comprehensive 11-2 victory then, in our first ever County Cup game, the Wasps will travel to play Barnton Youth (near Northwich) in Round 2, scheduled for the 4th October.

Please continue to visit the website for more match results and reports as the season progresses and, later this week, Jordan Coxall will be posting the rules/scoring for the Wasps Dream Team competition he's developed, with the first results to be posted after our League opener against Chester Nomads this Sunday.
